Lancia Beta Spider

The Lancia Beta Spider Zagato.

Vehicle Overview

The Lancia Beta Spider, introduced in 1974, is a fascinating example of automotive design from an era marked by a blend of innovation and stylistic experimentation. Born out of a Pininfarina study, the Beta Spider could be described as a “Targa” due to its distinctive design. It featured a semi-open configuration with a removable rigid roof and a rear folding top, complemented by a robust central roll bar that provided both structural rigidity and enhanced safety, a reflection of the period’s emphasis on improving vehicle safety standards. Unlike many of its contemporaries, the Beta Spider was not manufactured entirely by Lancia. Instead, the process involved a unique collaboration between Lancia and the renowned coachbuilder Zagato. The process began with Lancia’s standard Beta Coupé bodies, which were sent to Zagato’s facility in Terrazzano di Rho. There, these bodies were carefully modified and configured to create the Spider’s distinctive open-air design. Once the modifications were complete, the bodies were shipped back to Lancia’s plant in Chivasso for the installation of the mechanical components, which were identical to those found in the Beta Coupé. The meticulous craftsmanship of this process is subtly acknowledged in the form of the letter “Z” stamped on the bottom of the luggage compartment mat, a nod to Zagato’s role in the car’s creation. Despite its innovative design and the intricate manufacturing process, the Beta Spider did not achieve the same level of popularity as other models in the Beta range. Its high cost and niche appeal contributed to its limited success, leading to its discontinuation in 1982. However, it did garner some acclaim in the US market, where its unique design and limited availability gave it a certain allure among enthusiasts. The Beta Spider remains a noteworthy chapter in the story of Lancia and a testament to the era’s automotive creativity.
