The Lancia Aurelia B50 Coupé Vignale designed by Michelotti.
The Lancia Aurelia B50 Coupé Vignale, designed by Giovanni Michelotti, is a prime example of the ‘transatlantic’ themes prevalent in Italian car design during the late 1940s and early 1950s. This influence is particularly evident in the car’s lavish and expressive use of chrome trim, reflecting the period’s fascination with American automotive styling. Under the hood, the Aurelia B50 Coupé Vignale houses the first series 1,750cc single carburetor engine. While not particularly powerful by modern standards, this engine provides sufficient torque, making the car practical and enjoyable to drive even on today’s highways. This blend of style and functionality is a hallmark of Lancia’s engineering philosophy during that era. Chassis number B50-1406 was ordered in the spring of 1951 by a main Lancia agent based in Novara, Piedmont, Italy. This agent had developed a specialty in Vignale-bodied Lancias, indicating a clear preference for the bespoke craftsmanship and distinctive design that Vignale offered. The car was delivered in early autumn of 1951 to a wealthy resident of Alessandria, also in Piedmont. Its debut at the 1951 Geneva Motor Show marked it as a significant piece of automotive artistry and innovation. Only three B50 Coupé Vignale cars with this specific body style have survived to this day, making them exceptionally rare and highly valued among collectors and enthusiasts. This rarity, combined with the car’s striking design and historical significance, enhances its desirability. In addition to the Aurelia, Vignale also applied the same body design to a Riley RMB, showcasing the versatility and appeal of Michelotti’s design language. This cross-pollination of design ideas between different marques underscores the collaborative and innovative spirit of the era. The Lancia Aurelia B50 Coupé Vignale, with its distinctive Michelotti design and transatlantic flair, remains a celebrated example of early 1950s Italian automotive design. Its survival and continued appreciation highlight the enduring legacy of Vignale’s craftsmanship and the timeless appeal of Lancia’s engineering.
