Lancia Astura Cabriolet Farina
Chassis
The Lancia Astura Cabriolet Farina chassis 33-3369.
Vehicle Overview
The Lancia Astura Cabriolet Farina exemplifies the elegance and innovation of Italian automotive design in the 1930s. The Astura’s introduction in 1931, alongside the Artena, marked a shift from using Greek alphabet model designations to Italian place names, reflecting the nationalistic spirit of the era. This model, one of Lancia’s most significant, was powered by an updated version of the narrow-angle V8 engine, initially 2.6 liters and later enlarged to 3.0 liters in the Astura Series III of 1934. This series also introduced hydraulic brakes and came in both short and long-wheelbase versions. The Series IV Astura featured a platform chassis with an extended wheelbase, attracting some of the era’s finest coachwork and being widely used by Italian government departments for official transportation. Stabilimenti Farina of Turin, the family firm that gave Battista ‘Pinin’ Farina his foundation in coachbuilding, was one of the premier creators of bespoke bodywork for the Astura chassis. This particular one-off Lancia Astura Cabriolet, designed by Mario Revelli di Beaumont for Stabilimenti Farina, showcases exquisite craftsmanship and design. It is highlighted in Wim Oude Weernink’s book ‘La Lancia‘ and stands out for its unique design elements. A saloon-bodied sister car with a similar design resides in the Museo Nicolis in Verona. This specific Cabriolet was offered by Bonhams in 2014, underscoring its status as a coveted collector’s item and a testament to the artistry of pre-war Italian automotive design.
