Chassis
The Lancia Astura Cabriolet 33-5125 by Stabilimenti Farina.
Vehicle Overview
The Lancia Astura Cabriolet 33-5125 by Stabilimenti Farina, holds a distinguished place in automotive history, particularly due to its association with Count Giovanni Lurani Cernuschi (1905-1995). Lurani, a prominent journalist and racing driver, was a significant figure in the Italian automotive scene during the 1930s. In 1934, Lurani acquired a Lancia Astura, specifically a third series short chassis model. Delivered without a body and outfitted solely with four baquet seats, Lurani wasted no time in putting it to the test. On September 30, 1934, he drove the car in the Lecco-Maggio hill climb race, clinching victory in the over 1500cc touring class. Beyond its racing prowess, the car served Lurani well in various events, including the Klausen race and the grueling 24 Hours of Pescara. The winter of 1935 marked a transformative period for the chassis as it was bodied by Stabilimenti Farina, a renowned coachbuilder. Upon completion, the Lancia Astura Cabriolet embarked on a series of prestigious concourses d’elegance. It made a stunning debut at Viareggio on March 4th, securing both the first prize and a special prize. This success was followed by victories at Montecarlo on March 30th, where it again won first prize, and at Cannes on April 2nd, where it earned the grand prix and the coveted Lalique cup. Its triumphant streak continued at Villa d’Este, where it once more took home the first prize. Following a victorious season in the spotlight, Lurani’s focus shifted as he volunteered for military service in East Africa. Subsequently, the car was sold to Gildo Strazza. Today, this historically significant vehicle is part of the esteemed Lopresto Collection. The Lancia Astura Cabriolet Farina 33-5125 not only showcases the remarkable craftsmanship of Stabilimenti Farina but also reflects the storied legacy of Count Giovanni Lurani. Its victories in both racing and elegance competitions underscore its dual prowess, making it a celebrated icon in the annals of automotive history.
