The 1932 Lancia Astura Series 1 Berlina Boneschi is a rare gem from automotive history, representing both the elegance of bespoke coachbuilding and a fascinating backstory. This specific car, chassis 1134 with engine number 136, is one of the final units of the first series, of which only 496 were produced between 1931 and 1932. While Series 2 followed closely, with 750 units, both models used the same robust 73-horsepower, 2606cc V8 engine. The engine was known for its smooth torque delivery, reaching speeds up to 125 km/h—certainly excessive for the car’s later owners, the nuns of a convent. Lancia had close ties to Pininfarina, and Touring‘s designs were instantly recognizable, so it was less common for the Milanese coachbuilder Boneschi to work on Lancia models. Yet, this particular Astura was a special, one-off commission. A Milanese nobleman donated it to the convent near Sondrio, where it was likely used for various charitable purposes: delivering food to the poor, acting as an ambulance, or even transporting the Mother Superior to meet with local clergy. After Italy entered World War II, the car was stored in the convent’s cellar, where the conditions were ideal for preserving its original condition. Remarkably, the Lancia Astura still retains its 1932 hand-applied paintwork, a testament to the craftsmanship of Boneschi’s artisans. Boneschi, typically known for flamboyant designs, created a restrained yet dignified body for this car. Externally, it resembles Lancia’s standard saloon, with subtle curves that set it apart. The interior is a showcase of period details, including elegant cut-glass vases, adding a touch of luxury to the therwise modest vehicle. Decades later, this Astura re-entered the spotlight, winning the 1988 Trans Appenninica regularity race, thus reconciling its history with modern-day automotive enthusiasts and proving that in the cellar, there can be both good wine and great cars.
