The Lancia Aprilia Giardinetta one-off, built in 1948 by aeronautic constructor and coachbuilder Francis Lombardi, stands as a remarkable example of automotive craftsmanship blending aeronautical innovation with classic Italian design. Commissioned by an aristocratic vineyard owner near Siena, this unique creation was based on the Lancia Aprilia, Vincenzo Lancia’s final masterpiece before his passing. Lancia’s Aprilia was already celebrated for its advanced engineering, with its compact, lightweight body and pioneering independent suspension system. By choosing this vehicle as the mechanical foundation, Lombardi showcased a refined sense of taste, marrying excellent engineering with sophisticated design. As an aviation expert and a World War I hero, Francis Lombardi applied his knowledge of aerodynamics and materials to the car’s design, resulting in the creation of a “Woody” style Giardinetta that was exceptionally light and streamlined compared to the typical, more heavy-handed post-war coachbuilding traditions. The vehicle’s lines were remarkably clean, with a luminous appearance that stood apart from other creations of the era. The Lancia Aprilia Giardinetta’s design was a striking departure from the traditional boxy and utilitarian “Woody” designs that were popular during the time, setting it apart as an elegant, modernized version of a family station wagon. Its proportions and fluid lines made it both functional and aesthetically appealing, offering a new take on utility without sacrificing style. Interestingly, the same design was also used by Lombardi on the Fiat 1100 chassis called Saloncino, showcasing the coachbuilder’s ability to adapt his vision to different vehicles.
