Lancia Aprilia Cabriolet Balbo
A Lancia on a Fiat chassis? A special Lancia Aprilia Cabriolet built by Carrozzeria Balbo on a Fiat chassis.
Vehicle Overview
This Lancia Aprilia Cabriolet ordered by an Italian general is a creation of the Balbo coachbuilder. Build by taking over a Fiat 1100 chassis on which were mounted Lancia Aprilia mechanics: In the winter of 1934-1935, the Lancia engineering office team designed the engine (which Lancia wants under a liter and a half) for which the classic narrow V-cylinder scheme was retained, but which was distinguished by the hemispherical shape of the combustion chambers, obtained thanks to a particular and somewhat complex distribution system (patented). The cylinder head is cast iron and has the intake ports located on the right side of the engine, the exhaust ports on the left side (the cylinder head is thus of the cross-flow type). On the dyno, the engine (with an aluminum cylinder block and cast-iron cylinder liners brought back) delivers the power of more than 47 horsepower at about 4,000 rpm, a high value for a 1352 cm³ engine of that era. The Lancia Aprilia Cabriolet Balbo: Shared chassis, something fairly common today but not in 1939.
