The Lancia Appia Sport Vignale, a one-off designed by Giovanni Michelotti in 1956, exemplifies a bold and innovative approach to automotive design. As part of Lancia’s initiative to create bespoke models on 12 Appia chassis, Vignale eagerly accepted the challenge and crafted three distinct versions. This project marked the beginning of a deeper collaboration between Vignale and Lancia, leading to Vignale’s subsequent involvement in the mass production of the Convertible and Coupe Lusso models. The Appia Sport prototype, distinct from the series-produced Appia Sport by Zagato, was built on chassis number 81200.1001 and showcased Michelotti’s visionary design. The car featured a striking front grille design with integrated headlights and the prominent “Appia Sport” inscription. The minimalist Lancia emblem positioned behind the text further accentuates the vehicle’s creative yet bold character. Michelotti’s design included a two-tone paint job, which complemented the overall aesthetic. White wall tires and a unique chrome bumper that wraps around the front fenders and extends to the A-pillar and tail, forming subtle fins, highlighted the vehicle’s innovative styling. This distinctive chrome detailing added a touch of sophistication and continuity to the car’s design, merging seamlessly with its sculptural lines.
