Lamborghini P140 Gandini

The Lamborghini P140, a prototype designed to replace the Jalpa in the late 1980s, featuring a distinctive V10 engine, advanced design by Marcello Gandini.

Vehicle Overview

In the late 1980s, Lamborghini embarked on a mission to revitalize its lineup, aiming to replace the aging Countach and Jalpa models. As development on the flagship V12 model was already underway, attention turned to creating a new entry-level model. Renowned Italian designer Marcello Gandini, a familiar collaborator with Lamborghini, was once again entrusted with the design work. The result was the P140, a wedge-shaped 2-door coupé that seamlessly integrated into the Lamborghini family. The P140 showcased innovative features, including a new 4.0-liter V10 engine, an ergonomic dashboard, and an extensive use of aluminum in its construction. The development continued into the 1990s, but Chrysler, then the owner of Lamborghini, made the difficult decision to shelve the project. The Gulf Oil Crisis of the 1990s had led to a downturn in the sales of high-performance sports cars, making it challenging for the P140 to justify its development costs. However, the story of the P140 did not end there. The engine and transmission designed for the P140 found a new home in the Giugiaro-designed Calà concept, unveiled at the 1995 Geneva Motor Show. Unlike the wedge-themed Lamborghini P140 by Gandini, the Calà featured a curvaceous design with a carbon-fiber body and a targa top, showcasing Lamborghini’s adaptability. Despite the revived interest, financial constraints once again halted the development of a new entry-level model. It took until 2002 for Lamborghini to introduce the Gallardo, featuring an evolution of the V10 engine from the P140. The Gallardo proved to be a commercial success, filling the void left by the Jalpa. Records indicate that three to four P140 prototypes were built. The first, painted orange, achieved a top speed of 295 km/h on the Nardò Ring in Italy. The second, painted red, remained a rolling chassis without an engine. The third, painted white, unfortunately suffered a crash during testing but was later restored and is now on display at Lamborghini’s official museum in Sant’Agata Bolognese, Italy. The Lamborghini P140 remains a significant part of the brand’s history, representing the first foray into V10 engines and showcasing the brand’s resilience despite the challenges faced during its development.
