Karmann Cheetah
The Karmann Cheetah by Italdesign Giugiaro.
Vehicle Overview
The Karmann Cheetah, a collaborative effort between Italdesign and Karmann, represents an innovative roadster designed with an emphasis on low production costs. Based on the mechanics of the 1600 Beetle, the Cheetah emerged from a partnership that began in 1969, eventually leading to the creation of the Volkswagen Scirocco in 1974. However, for the 1971 Geneva Motor Show, the focus was on a cost-effective roadster intended for mass production. Designed by the renowned Giorgetto Giugiaro, the Cheetah utilized the 1600 Beetle’s platform and mechanics, continuing Giugiaro’s exploration of squared shapes as seen in his earlier work, the Tapiro. The Cheetah’s development coincided with the creation of the Alfasud Caimano, which would be showcased shortly after at the Turin Motor Show. Both prototypes shared a similar design philosophy, featuring advanced and forward-thinking aesthetics. The front end of the Cheetah was characterized by a soft-nose design and overhang lights, giving it a sleek and contemporary appearance. Unlike traditional roadsters with roll bars, the Cheetah featured two strong pillars that simplified the hardtop mechanisms, enhancing both the vehicle’s design and functionality. Powering the Cheetah was a 1.6-liter engine delivering 50 horsepower, a choice that underscored the emphasis on economical engineering while still providing a gratifying driving experience. This combination of practicality and innovative design highlighted the strengths of the Italdesign and Karmann collaboration. The Karmann Cheetah, despite being a prototype, showcased Italdesign’s ability to merge aesthetic innovation with functional engineering. Its distinctive design elements and reliable mechanical foundation offered a glimpse into the future of affordable, stylish roadsters. The project demonstrated the potential of combining cost-effective manufacturing with cutting-edge design, paving the way for future collaborations and advancements in automotive design between Italdesign and major car manufacturers.
