Jowett Jupiter Farina
The Jowett Jupiter is a British car which was produced by Jowett Cars Ltd of Idle, near Bradford.
Vehicle Overview
The Jowett Jupiter Farina, introduced in 1950, stands as a memorable British sports car, notable for its engineering and classic Italian design touches. The bare chassis made its initial appearance at the London Motor Show on September 28, 1949, while the fully completed car debuted at the New York Motor Show in April 1950. Before this, the chassis also made a continental appearance at the Geneva Motor Show on March 16, 1950. Production continued until 1954, with only a few custom-bodied examples made by distinguished coachbuilders like Ghia Aigle, Abbott of Farnham, and Stabilimenti Farina, the latter crafting four exclusive models. The Stabilimenti Farina design language is evident throughout the Jupiter Farina, with graceful curves, balanced proportions, and sleek, flowing lines. In fact, the Jupiter exhibits certain stylistic similarities to the Cisitalia 202, another Italian masterpiece designed by Stabilimenti Farina in the late 1940s. Like the Cisitalia 202, the Jupiter Farina has a minimalist yet refined aesthetic, focusing on smooth, unbroken surfaces and a slightly elongated hood. This Italian design influence on the Jupiter lent it an elegance unusual for a British sports car with a 1500 cc engine, making it visually distinctive in its category. However, the high cost of these custom-crafted bodies led Jowett to bring production in-house, where they manufactured a more standardized version of the Jupiter. This allowed the company to produce a sports car that was both stylish and accessible, while still retaining the character of the custom-bodied versions. Today, the Jowett Jupiter Farina is prized for its rarity and its blend of British engineering with classic Italian design, especially the few original examples built by Stabilimenti Farina. These models stand as exquisite representations of mid-century automotive design, showcasing the timeless appeal of Italian styling elements, even on a distinctly British platform.
