The Jensen Nova Mk1 by Vignale.

Vehicle Overview

The Jensen Nova by Vignale is a fascinating piece of automotive history, stemming from a collaboration between Jensen Motors and Italian coachbuilder Vignale. In 1966, Vignale requested a left-hand drive chassis from Jensen Motors to build his own unique body design, which he had originally submitted as a potential replacement for the Jensen CV8. Despite Jensen choosing a design by Touring over Vignale’s, the Italian designer proceeded to create his own version on a Jensen chassis, resulting in the Jensen Nova Mk1. Chassis JM/EXP/117 was specifically built for Vignale, featuring a slightly shorter wheelbase than the standard Interceptor chassis. This custom chassis came equipped with a Chrysler 383 engine and a Chrysler 4-speed manual gearbox, and it was shipped to Vignale in October 1966. Vignale’s design envisioned a striking two-seater fastback with lowered engine mounts for a sleeker bonnet line. One of the standout features was the electrically operated retractable headlights, which added to the car’s futuristic appeal. By February 1967, the Jensen Nova Mk1 was complete. The car was finished in dark metallic green with a black roof panel, and its interior boasted an unusual beige and black color scheme. The bodywork combined alloy and fiberglass, featuring lavish stainless steel integral finishes at the front and rear instead of traditional bumpers. The metallic green sill covers and Campagnolo alloy wheels completed the car’s stylish exterior. The Nova debuted at the 1967 Geneva Motor Show, where it was showcased on Vignale’s stand. After Geneva, the car was re-sprayed in off-white cream and re-trimmed in red leather. Vignale also modified the rear styling and added Jensen Interceptor-style stainless steel sill covers and jack point covers. This face-lifted version was then presented at the Turin Motor Show in April 1967. The car’s exact tenure with Vignale is unclear, but by November 1967, it had been sold to the French Jensen distributor, Monsieur Ladouch of Societe France Motors. A letter from Jensen Motors dated December 7, 1967, confirmed the sale and explicitly stated that the Nova came with no manufacturer’s warranty. Today, the Jensen Nova survives in France, standing as a unique testament to the collaborative efforts of Jensen Motors and Alfredo Vignale, blending British engineering with Italian design flair.
