The Jaguar E-Type Frua is a unique prototype designed by the Italian designer Pietro Frua, commissioned by the prominent British car dealer and racer John Coombs. This one-of-a-kind vehicle was envisioned as a “new look” Jaguar, incorporating Coombs’ race modifications along with significant front and rear body conversions made to standard showroom cars. Originally painted in Carmen Red, the car was newly finished in Silver with black leather interior just in time for its debut at the Geneva Motor Show in 1966. The E-Type Frua prototype received mixed reviews at its Geneva unveiling. Although it attracted some initial interest and a few orders, Coombs decided to cancel the project. He was disappointed by both the escalating costs and the direction the collaboration with Frua was taking. Despite this, the car was shown later that year at the London Motor Show before being sold into private ownership. According to DVLA records, the first registered keeper of the Jaguar E-Type Frua was Mr. McCulloch, who owned a successful haberdashery business in London. He owned the car for 18 years until his passing, after which it was transferred to his wife. She eventually sold the car to an owner in Devon, who kept it from 1985 until 1996. The car then moved to an owner in Bournemouth and, at some point, briefly made its way to Belgium before returning to the UK in 2008. The Jaguar E-Type Frua remains a fascinating chapter in the history of Jaguar prototypes, highlighting the unique interplay between British engineering and Italian design. Its journey through various owners and its rare status make it a notable piece of automotive history, cherished by collectors and enthusiasts alike.
