Vehicle Overview

The Italdesign Aspid, developed in the early 1970s, is a direct evolution of the Aztec prototype, with both vehicles sharing similar design characteristics from the waistline up. The primary differences between the two prototypes are found in the front bumper and bonnet. The Aspid features a centrally located air intake in the front bumper, while the bonnet is notably smaller compared to the open-topped Aztec. The Aspid embodies the one-box coupé concept—a theme first explored in 1968 with the Bizzarrini Manta and revisited in 2008 with the Quaranta. This design approach emphasizes a streamlined, cohesive shape, which is integral to the car’s aerodynamic and aesthetic appeal. A key innovation in the Aspid project was the introduction of a new technique for molding windows with double curvature. Unlike traditional glass that is cylindrical in cross-section, the Aspid used spherical glass. This advancement allowed the designers to integrate the glazed surfaces seamlessly into the car’s flowing lines, eliminating the need for visual discontinuities. The result was a more harmonious and continuous exterior design. The passenger compartment of the Aspid is defined by a unique dome, divided into two cross-sections. The door design features a two-part construction: the side panel opens conventionally, while the upper part rotates forward, facilitating easier access. Additionally, the car’s two side panels include access to essential vehicle information, controlled by numerical codes. The rear wheels of the Aspid are designed with streamlined covers, contributing to the vehicle’s aerodynamic efficiency. Overall, the Italdesign Aspid represents a significant step in automotive design, blending innovative glass technology with a sophisticated one-box coupé layout.
