Vehicle Overview
The Isotta Fraschini Tipo 8A SS Faux Cabriolet, chassis number 1423, is a masterpiece of Italian automotive luxury and bespoke craftsmanship. Commissioned by the distinguished Marquis Francesco de Pinedo, this unique vehicle embodies both the prestige of the Isotta Fraschini marque and the personalized elegance of coachbuilder Cesare Sala. Francesco de Pinedo, born in Naples on February 16, 1890, was a celebrated Italian aviator and military general. Renowned for his pioneering long-distance flights during the 1920s, de Pinedo became a symbol of Italian aviation prowess, earning multiple military decorations including three silver medals, a war cross for military valor, and a bronze medal for naval valor. A noted transatlantic aviator, he was also decorated with the Knight’s Cross of the Military Order of Savoy. Despite his professional successes, de Pinedo’s career took a turbulent turn when he conflicted with Italo Balbo, leading to his resignation from his position as Deputy Chief of Staff of the Regia Aeronautica. Tragically, he lost his life on September 2, 1933, while attempting a record-breaking solo flight from New York to Baghdad, a journey of 6,300 miles. For such a distinguished figure, only a car of equal stature would suffice. Delivered as a bare chassis, the Tipo 8A SS was completed by Cesare Sala, one of Milan’s most respected coachbuilders, known for creating luxurious and refined bodies. The assembly was completed in early 1928, and the finished vehicle was officially delivered to Marquis de Pinedo on April 3, 1928. The car itself is a stunning example of the faux cabriolet style, blending the stately presence of a closed saloon with the sleek aesthetics of an open-top cabriolet. This stylistic choice was typical of Cesare Sala’s work, balancing formal luxury with a hint of sporty flair. The long, imposing hood, adorned with the signature Isotta Fraschini emblem and flanked by elegant chrome accents, speaks to the car’s powerful straight-eight engine—a hallmark of the Tipo 8A SS series, known for its smooth performance and commanding road presence. The cabin is generously proportioned, designed to accommodate its distinguished owner in absolute comfort. The faux cabriolet roof design, giving the impression of a convertible while maintaining a closed configuration, was a practical yet stylish solution, befitting the grand touring aspirations of the vehicle. The rear wheel covers and subtle body lines emphasize the car’s streamlined yet authoritative appearance. The combination of Isotta Fraschini’s engineering excellence and Sala’s meticulous craftsmanship resulted in a car that was both technically advanced and aesthetically remarkable. Its powerful 7.4-liter straight-eight engine, producing ample horsepower, allowed it to perform effortlessly on long-distance journeys, mirroring the adventurous spirit of its first owner.
