The story of Touring Superleggera
The early years In early 1926, two lawyers from Milan – Felice Bianchi Anderloni and Gaetano Ponzoni – decided to leave behind the world…
The Tipo 8C Monterosa cars were built between 1945 and 1949 with development having begun as early as 1943. The model was intended to be Isotta Fraschini’s initial post-war offering once normal industrial activity resumed. The Tipo 8C would be Isotta Fraschini’s first new model since production of the Tipo 8B ended in 1934 after which all activities were limited to military rearmament/war production by the National Fascist Party in power.
The Isotta Fraschini 8C Monterosa Cabriolet stands as a captivating relic of automotive history, marking the final chapter of the renowned Milanese brand. Unveiled with grandeur at the Paris Motor Show in October 1948 within the opulent walls of the Grand Palais, the Monterosa was intended to be the triumphant return of Isotta Fraschini to the pinnacle of automotive excellence. Sadly, this ambitious venture never materialized beyond the prototype stage, becoming the brand’s swan song. The 8C Monterosa was part of a series of pre-built chassis, each designed to manifest the grandeur of Isotta Fraschini. Among the prototypes were a 2-door sedan by Touring, a pair of 4-door sedans crafted by Touring and Zagato respectively, and the exquisite Isotta Fraschini 8C Monterosa Cabriolet, a masterpiece designed by Boneschi. Regardless of the body style, all versions featured spacious interiors accommodating six passengers. The attempt to resurrect the brand’s automotive dominance proved to be a futile endeavor. Despite the grand aspirations, the Monterosa failed to progress beyond the prototype stage, and Isotta Fraschini faced significant challenges, leading to repeated restructuring of the company’s holding. Remarkably, this tumultuous period allowed the preservation of two Monterosa prototypes. These remaining artifacts include a black coupe featuring a sunroof and a two-tone white and dark blue convertible, both serving as poignant reminders of an unfulfilled vision. While the Isotta Fraschini 8C Monterosa Cabriolet never graced the production lines, its legacy endures as a symbol of the brand’s pursuit of automotive excellence and the challenges that led to its ultimate demise. Today, these rare prototypes serve as a testament to the resilience of Isotta Fraschini, frozen in time within the confines of automotive history.
