The Isotta Fraschini Tipo 8A Landaulet by Sala and restored by Riva.
Vehicle Overview
The Isotta Fraschini Tipo 8A Landaulet is a remarkable example of early automotive luxury and craftsmanship, with a unique history reflected in its bodywork, which bears badges from two distinguished Italian coachbuilders: Sala and Riva. As one of the earliest Tipo 8As produced, this Landaulet showcases styling elements reminiscent of its predecessor, the Tipo 8. The design features, including the fenders, flat single-bar bumpers, and nautical-style cowl vents, indicate a transitional phase in Isotta Fraschini’s design evolution. The car was originally bodied by Cesare Sala of Milan, a prominent coachbuilder known for its close relationship with Isotta Fraschini. This connection was further strengthened by Oreste Fraschini, a member of the founding family, who held a seat on Sala’s board. Sala’s involvement ensured that the car’s design and craftsmanship met the high standards expected of an Isotta Fraschini vehicle. Throughout its history, the car changed hands multiple times, reflecting its desirability and prestige. On July 16, 1958, the car returned to its roots when it was sold back to Isotta Fraschini Automobili-Breda of Saronno for 100,000 Italian lire. Recognizing the car’s historical and aesthetic value, the factory decided to restore the Landaulet to its original glory. For this significant restoration project, Carrozzeria Riva was commissioned. Riva, another esteemed Italian coachbuilder, was tasked with refurbishing the car, ensuring that it retained its classic elegance while restoring its former splendor. The involvement of Carrozzeria Riva in the restoration process is why the car now features two different coachbuilder badges on its body. The Sala badge signifies the original craftsmanship and design, while the Riva badge represents the meticulous restoration work that preserved the vehicle’s legacy. This unique blend of historical craftsmanship and modern restoration highlights the car’s extraordinary journey and its enduring appeal as a symbol of luxury and automotive excellence.
