The Iso Grifo Targa by Carrozzeria Pavesi.
The Iso Grifo Targa, a rare and exclusive variant of the Iso Grifo, was produced in 1968 by Carrozzeria Pavesi, a small coachbuilder based in Milan. This special edition was extremely limited, with only 17 units ever made, making it one of the most sought-after versions of the Grifo. The Targa version was created in response to the growing demand for open-top sports cars during the 1960s, a period when many automotive enthusiasts were seeking the thrill of driving a convertible without sacrificing the rigidity and performance of a coupe. Carrozzeria Pavesi, known for its expertise in custom conversions, was entrusted with the task of transforming the Grifo into a Targa. The result was a car that retained the elegant and aggressive lines of the original Giugiaro-designed coupe while adding the versatility of a removable roof panel. The design of the Iso Grifo Targa remained largely unchanged from the original coupe, preserving the low, feline fastback silhouette and the distinct, smoothly rounded fenders that were signatures of Giorgetto Giugiaro’s design. The only significant modification was the addition of the removable roof section, which allowed the driver and passenger to experience open-air driving. This roof panel could be easily removed and stored, providing the flexibility to enjoy both the security of a closed coupe and the exhilaration of a convertible. Despite this alteration, the structural integrity and performance of the Grifo were carefully maintained. Carrozzeria Pavesi ensured that the Targa version offered the same driving experience that the Iso Grifo was famous for, with its powerful American V8 engine and impeccable handling. The attention to detail in the conversion process ensured that the Targa retained the same balance and stability as the original coupe. The Iso Grifo Targa is a rare gem in the world of classic cars, with its limited production run of just 17 examples. Today, it stands as a testament to the creativity and craftsmanship of Carrozzeria Pavesi and remains a highly prized collector’s item for enthusiasts of Italian automotive design and engineering.
