Innocenti A40
The Innocenti A40 designed by Pininfarina.
Vehicle Overview
The Innocenti A40: When Innocenti decided to complement its traditional production (steel tubes and scooters) with the production of cars, it entered into an agreement with BMC in 1959 to build the new A40 designed by Pininfarina under license. In fact, with the high prices of the British pound and customs duties on imports, the only plausible solution to sell the A40 in Italy was to enter into an agreement with an “on site” manufacturer. For its part, Innocenti saw in this the possibility of presenting itself on the market with a product that was part of a segment, that between the 600 and the 1100, not yet covered by the largest national manufacturer. In 1960 the Innocenti A40 was thus presented, in a virtually identical guise to the English original. For a short period, by a company outside the Innocenti, car enhancement kits produced by the Italian market were sold on the Italian market. English industry Alexander. The desire of the Milanese manufacturer not to limit itself to producing a mere clone however led, in 1961, to the launch of the A40 Combinata, a sort of prelude to the Austin A40 Countryman (which was to debut only the following year); this version differed from the sedan for the presence of a rear hatch in two pieces: an upper one which included the rear window and a lower one, which folded out. In 1962, following the English version, the second series was born, with touches on the front, engine boosted to 44hp SAE and extended wheelbase of 89 millimeters. The versions remained 2: “Berlina” (2 doors) and “Combinata” (3 doors). In 1963 the A40 S was born, with an engine of 1098 cm³ (50hp SAE) and two body variants: the two-door sedan and the Combined; the latter differed from the previous Combined for the presence of a single-piece tailgate, hinged at the top.Remember the advertisement, which saw Gigliola Cinquetti as testimonial, with, in the message, the explicit indication of her not being old … for the driving license. The A40 sedan came out of the list in 1965, the Combined instead in 1967. The total units produced by Innocenti were 67,706.
