Hyundai Pony Coupé, the lost prototype returns after 50 years rebuilt by Giugiaro
The remake of the 1974 concept was presented at Lake Como: ‘It re-establishes a strong link with our past’, explains the president of the Korean group
The Hyundai Pony Coupé designed by Giorgetto Giugiaro.
The Hyundai Pony Coupé, born from the chassis of the Hyundai Pony sedan, stands as a testament to innovative automotive design, destined to leave an indelible mark on the industry. Its significance becomes even more apparent when considering its role as the primary inspiration for the iconic DeLorean DMC-12. This experimental creation by Italdesign boasts a sleek and graphic surface treatment, showcasing a striking visual language. The adoption of body-colored bumpers adds a touch of elegance, reminiscent of the iconic Asso di Picche design. The interior, a masterpiece of early Italdesign prototypes, introduces a dash of avant-garde aesthetics. The cylindrical dashboard and seats, resembling industrial design objects, set the Pony Coupé apart as a unique and visionary creation. Originally conceived as an independent research project, the Hyundai management recognized its potential on the eve of the Turin Motor Show. Urged to embrace the concept, they sought to rename it the Hyundai Pony Coupé. However, the confusion arose when Italdesign had already released press materials under a different name: Asso di Fiori. This apparent miscommunication added a layer of intrigue and humor to the car’s legacy. The confusion persisted for years, culminating in 2023 when Hyundai and Giugiaro announced the resurrection of the lost Pony Coupé concept. In a collaborative effort, Giugiaro’s design company, GFG Style, took the reins to rebuild and reimagine the legendary prototype. The rebirth of the Pony Coupé was set to be unveiled in the spring of 2023, marking a pivotal moment in automotive history. As the prototype reemerges, it not only pays homage to the visionary design of the past but also stands as a testament to the enduring influence of the Hyundai Pony Coupé on the world of concept cars.
