In August 1953, Hudson Motor Car Company commissioned Carrozzeria Touring of Milan, Italy, renowned for their lightweight “Superleggera” construction, to create a body mock-up for their upcoming 1957 lineup. Initially tasked with a two-seater sports car on the Hudson Jet chassis, Touring ventured into uncharted territory by crafting a four-door prototype instead. Unofficially dubbed the “Hornet Italia” within Hudson circles, this prototype diverged from Hudson’s traditional styling cues, embracing a sleek, European-inspired aesthetic. Featuring smooth, flowing lines and an air of refined elegance, the Hornet Italia hinted at the luxurious automobiles emerging from post-war Italy. Intended solely as a design exercise, the Hudson Hornet Italia 4-door prototype was never meant to leave the confines of Touring Superleggera’s workshop. However, the tumultuous merger of Hudson with Nash Motors led to unexpected developments. The prototype caught the eye of its designer, Frank Spring, who recognized its historical significance and acquired it for preservation. For Spring, acquiring the Hornet Italia represented not just a personal connection to his work but also a tangible piece of automotive innovation.
