Honda HP-X

The Honda HP-X Pininfarina concept car.

Vehicle Overview

The Honda HP-X concept car by Pininfarina emerged from a collaborative relationship dating back several years, with notable projects such as the City Cabriolet displayed at the Tokyo Motor Show in 1984. Honda entrusted Pininfarina with the task of realizing their vision for a high-performance two-seater sports car equipped with a mid-engine power unit. The result was a striking concept that combined advanced materials, aerodynamic innovations, and cutting-edge electronics. The HP-X concept was designed to house a special version of Honda’s V6 Formula 2 engine, with a displacement of 1,996 cc. Unveiled as a full-scale three-dimensional model at the 1984 Turin Motor Show, the bodywork featured strongly innovative solutions. These included the use of composite light materials such as honeycomb panels, Kevlar, and carbon fibers, which contributed to the car’s lightweight structure and advanced aerodynamics. A key aspect of the design was the specific arrangement of mechanical units, which allowed the floor to be shaped to maximize ground effect while maintaining suitability for normal road use. The front end of the car showcased Honda’s familial styling with distinctive headlamps and air intakes. The car’s profile was defined by a continuous camber that seamlessly joined the front end, bonnet, and roof. Additionally, a series of channels along the front lid created air outlets for engine cooling. One of the most distinctive features of the HP-X concept was its windshield and roof, made from a single piece of transparent material. The rear of the car extended into a fairing that served to improve aerodynamics and functioned as an air brake, activated by the brake pedal at high speeds. The kamm tail rear end prominently displayed upright exhaust manifolds and channels designed to enhance ground effect. Inside, the HP-X offered optimal comfort for both the driver and passenger, thanks to extensive ergonomic, functional, and styling research. The interior’s standout feature was the generous use of electronics, including a computer system that displayed vital information such as speed, fuel level, oil pressure, and average fuel consumption on a dashboard monitor. Another monitor could display a road map with the car’s real-time position, aiding navigation and highlighting potential roadblocks through a sonar system. This electronic driver support system, developed by Honda, enhanced driving convenience and safety, particularly in challenging conditions or during parking maneuvers. The Honda HP-X concept car by Pininfarina represents a visionary blend of advanced technology, innovative design, and engineering prowess, showcasing what the future of high-performance sports cars could hold.
