The story of Ghia – part 1

One of the first Fiesta-based concepts, the Ghia Prima was featured at the 1976 Turin Motor Show. It was a joint collaboration between Ford designers and Ghia’s coachbuilders. Prima’s concept was for interchanging roof sections that would transform the shape and functionality of the vehicle. Its character could change into a pickup, station wagon, fastback coupe or two-door notchback. It was shown with a red exterior and beige interior.
The Ford Prima is The most versatile prototype to date-it can be transformed into four different cars in a matter of minutes. It was produced by the Ford Design Studio in Dearborn, USA in collaboration with Carrozzeria Ghia of Turin. The “Prima” can be used as a sporty two-seater coupe, as a traditional family sedan (with a third rear door), as a “station wagon,” and finally as a van: and these transformations are achieved by simply replacing the roof, which can be put on and taken off very easily. The “Prima” has a tasversal engine and front-wheel drive, so it has almost identical mechanics to the Ford Fiesta, Ford’s baby that would be introduced a few months later in the Italian market. The adoption of the transverse engine saves considerable space, and the front-wheel drive, with the elimination of the transmission tunne, makes it possible to obtain the various body types derived from the base vehicle. On the outside, the Prima has a rather original design, thanks to three chrome moldings that run parallel across the rear of the car and the front, interrupting to leave room for rectangular headlights. The interior is very neat, as always when there is the Ghia touch.
