The Ford Connecta, introduced by Ghia as a concept car in 1991, was an innovative and forward-thinking proposal for a functional, environmentally friendly vehicle. Often referred to as the “Family Taxi,” the Connecta stood out not just for its compact size but for its cutting-edge electric propulsion system. Built on the foundation of an Escort van, the Connecta was Ford’s first electric show car, signaling the company’s early exploration into electric mobility. One of the most striking features of the Ford Connecta was its lightweight body made from carbon fiber and kevlar, materials chosen to enhance the car’s efficiency and performance. The aerodynamic design of the vehicle was also a key element in improving its energy efficiency. Despite its relatively small size, measuring just 166 inches (421 cm) in length, the Connecta was designed with remarkable versatility. The body featured a single door on the driver’s side and two doors on the passenger side, optimizing accessibility while maintaining the car’s sleek, functional profile. The interior of the Connecta was designed with flexibility in mind. It could accommodate up to six passengers—four forward-facing and two rearward-facing—making it a practical choice for urban families or taxi services. The innovative cabin layout also allowed for modulating the available space, enabling users to adjust the seating arrangement or loading area based on their needs. This modularity made the Connecta a versatile vehicle, suitable for various purposes, from personal transportation to a compact family taxi. As an electric vehicle, the Ford Connecta was an important step in Ford’s development of sustainable mobility solutions. Its design focused on efficiency, practicality, and functionality, with the goal of providing a practical solution for city transport while reducing environmental impact.
