The Ford Avant Garde designed and built by Ghia
The Ford Avant Garde was a concept car designed and built by Carrozzeria Ghia to explore advanced aerodynamics and drag coefficient reduction. Based on the American Ford Escort, the Avant Garde represented a bold departure from conventional car design, pushing the boundaries of technology and aesthetics. It was a study in performance, efficiency, and luxurious details, showcasing Ghia’s ability to blend function with refinement. The car featured a smooth underbody that was carefully crafted to reduce drag and improve aerodynamics. Its windshield was slanted at a sharp 67 degrees, further contributing to the car’s streamlined profile. The front of the Avant Garde had twin engine cooling ducts placed between the front bumper and hood, a design element that aided in cooling the engine while maintaining a clean and efficient airflow. Additionally, the headlights and front signal indicators were partially covered by electronically-operated flaps that would adjust to reduce air resistance. At the rear, the Avant Garde was equipped with an aerofoil to help maintain stability at higher speeds. The rear window could be opened to improve airflow, further enhancing the car’s aerodynamic performance. The interior of the Avant Garde was equally innovative, with hand-finished leather and suede lining the cabin to create a luxurious and comfortable environment. The electronic instruments were recessed to prevent reflections, providing a clear view for the driver while adding to the car’s sleek, high-tech appeal. One of the more unique features was the placement of controls—such as those for the signal indicators, horn, and wipers—directly behind the steering wheel, which was designed for ease of access without distractions. For added security, the car’s radio could be removed, and a carpet blind could be drawn over the interior to protect against prying eyes. The door panels were equipped with removable suede shoulder compartments, cleverly integrated into the armrests for added convenience. While the Ford Avant Garde was never meant for production, it remains an important piece of automotive history, reflecting the forward-thinking approach to design and engineering that Carrozzeria Ghia brought to Ford’s concept cars. Its blend of aerodynamics, luxury, and security features foreshadowed future innovations in car design.
