Ford Anglia Torino
The 1964 Ford Anglia Torino by OSI designed by Giovanni Michelotti.
Vehicle Overview
The Ford Anglia Torino, developed by Ford’s Italian subsidiary, is a distinctive automobile that combines elements from the classic Ford 105E Saloon with a fresh, stylish design. Launched in 1964, the Torino was built on the proven chassis and mechanical components of the 105E but featured entirely new body panels that set it apart from its predecessor. The renowned designer Giovanni Michelotti was responsible for the Torino’s sleek and elegant styling, which captured the essence of Italian automotive design. The manufacturing of the Anglia Torino was entrusted to Officina Stampaggi Industriali (OSI), a division of Ghia located in Turin. This city not only played a significant role in the car’s production but also lent its name to the revamped Ford model—Anglia Torino. The bodywork was crafted in Italy, with various parts sourced locally, enhancing the car’s Italian character. Notably, the Torino featured circular rear lights borrowed from the Bizzarrini Strada and even a Ferrari, reflecting a blend of influences that enriched its design. Two variants of the Anglia Torino were available to cater to different preferences: the standard model equipped with a 997cc engine and the sportier Torino S, which boasted a twin-choke Weber carburettor for improved performance. The latter variant was particularly well-received, offering enthusiasts a taste of sportiness in a compact package. Italian dealers were so impressed with the Torino that they gifted Filmer M. Paradise, a key figure in its launch, a silver-painted example as a token of appreciation. Despite its charm and appeal, the Anglia Torino had a limited production run, with just 10,007 units sold in Italy and additional marketing efforts in Belgium, the Netherlands, and Luxembourg. Today, only about 20 to 30 examples remain, primarily scattered across Italy, making the Ford Anglia Torino a rare and sought-after piece of automotive history. Its unique blend of British engineering and Italian design continues to captivate car enthusiasts and collectors alike.
