The Fiat X1/9 Passo Lungo one-off by Bertone.
The Fiat X1/9 Passo Lungo stands out as a unique and intriguing prototype from Bertone, crafted in 1978. This one-off variant of the popular Fiat X1/9 features an extended wheelbase, distinguishing it from the standard model. Built to explore the possibilities of enhancing the X1/9’s practicality and performance, the Passo Lungo retained the original 1.498 cc four-cylinder engine, a hallmark of the X1/9 series. Despite its extended dimensions, the prototype’s engine configuration remains faithful to the core of the X1/9 lineup, emphasizing Bertone’s commitment to maintaining the car’s performance while experimenting with new design elements. The Passo Lungo is notable for its minimal mileage, with only 802 kilometers recorded, reflecting its status as a prototype rather than a production vehicle. It does not bear a chassis number, further underscoring its unique status as a one-off creation rather than a part of a regular production run. Today, the Fiat X1/9 Passo Lungo is preserved in the Bertone Collection, owned by the Automotoclub Storico Italiano (ASI). It is housed at the Volandia Museum, where it continues to be a point of interest for automotive enthusiasts and historians alike. The museum provides a fitting home for this rare piece of automotive history, allowing visitors to appreciate Bertone’s innovative approach to design and their experimentation with the Fiat X1/9 platform.
