The Fiat Regata cabriolet one-off, known as “Skipper,” emerged as the potential swan song for Moretti. Unveiled at the Turin Motor Show in 1988, the Skipper aimed to showcase a unique collaboration between Fiat and Moretti in the realm of small series production. Initially, Fiat expressed openness to partnering with Moretti for the production of a limited series based on the Skipper prototype. The prospect of this collaboration seemed promising, hinting at a fusion of Fiat’s mainstream appeal with Moretti’s distinctive design flair. However, the tides shifted when Fiat reconsidered its stance, leading to a change of heart regarding the joint venture. Moretti, based in Turin, attributed the dissolution of the collaboration to the prohibitive costs associated with procuring standard Fiat Regata cars for transformation into the envisioned open car. The financial considerations prompted Fiat to pull out of the collaboration, ultimately leading to the cancellation of the Skipper project. The prototype, after being showcased at the Turin Motor Show, found its way into the hands of a car dealer in Modena, marking the end of Moretti’s aspirations for the Skipper. Unfortunately, this setback foreshadowed Moretti’s broader challenges, and shortly thereafter, the esteemed car producer ceased its operations permanently.
