The Fiat Punto Racer emerged as a distinctive addition to the Fiat Punto lineup, born out of a creative initiative that invited various designers to contribute their ideas to the new model. Bertone, answered the call with a coupé model named Racer. The inspiration behind this single version approach was rooted in a successful marketing strategy employed by Fiat in the 1960s. Back then, the strategy involved offering two derivatives alongside the production series model—an open car and a coupé. Bertone’s Racer was crafted on the chassis of the existing Punto Cabrio, adhering to the proven formula of the 1960s strategy. The use of the Racer name for this model echoed Bertone’s history, as it had been employed for the luxury trim of the 2nd generation 850 Spider in 1966. Maintaining the body structure of the tried-and-tested Punto Cabrio, the Fiat Punto Racer exuded a compact and dynamic profile. The design deliberately steered clear of excessive novelty, avoiding the need for a major overhaul of critical components. Notable differences from the Cabrio model included a panelled roof and other essential elements strategically incorporated to subtly yet assertively emphasize the car’s sporting mission. Unveiled at the 1994 Turin Motor Show, the Fiat Punto Racer showcased its prowess with the inclusion of the 133 Hp Punto GT Turbo engine. Fiat, during the same auto show, provided Italian coachbuilders with the opportunity to create unique concept cars based on the standard Fiat Punto. This initiative resulted in other intriguing models like the Punto Beach by Scioneri and the Punto Surf by Coggiola, adding a touch of diversity and innovation to the Fiat Punto family.
