Fiat Panda Destriero

The Fiat Panda Destriero beach car by Stola.

Vehicle Overview

In mid-March 1991, following the excitement surrounding the presentation of the Fiat Proteo at the Geneva Motor Show, Roberto Stola entrusted his nephew Alfredo Stola with an ambitious new project: to develop a unique show car based on the Fiat Panda. The vision was to create a “beach” version that paid homage to the Fiat 500 and 600 Jolly Ghia of the 1960s, reflecting both nostalgia and innovation. The result of this project was the Fiat Panda Destriero, a striking example of Italian creativity and craftsmanship. Alfredo and Maria Paola Stola worked passionately on the project, with guidance from Giuseppe Civardi, the technical manager at the Fiat Style Center in Turin. Designed by Aldo Garnero, the Fiat Panda Destriero was crafted to showcase the manufacturing prowess of Stola without being constrained by the confidentiality agreements of their usual customers. The Fiat Panda Destriero was built with meticulous attention to detail. The bodywork was executed by Opac, while the upholstery was provided by Salt of the Gavina family, known for their high-quality materials and craftsmanship. Originally named “Mirage,” the show car was first photographed in the picturesque setting of Portofino on September 3, 1991. Shortly thereafter, Fiat’s top management, particularly engineer Paolo Cantarella, recommended a name change to “Destriero.” The Fiat Panda Destriero stood as a testament to Stola’s ability to push the boundaries of automotive design. It was not just a showcase of design capability but also a precursor to many more concept vehicles that STOLA spa would develop independently. These concepts would later serve as demonstrations of their expertise and creativity to potential clients. The Fiat Panda Destriero remains a symbol of innovation and design excellence, reflecting a rich heritage while embracing a forward-looking vision. Its creation marked a significant moment in Stola’s history, highlighting their commitment to pushing the limits of automotive
