The Fiat Idea designed by Italdesign Giugiaro.
The Fiat Idea, crafted in Turin and assembled at the Fiat Mirafiori plant, represents Fiat’s venture into the realm of compact yet spacious cars. Originally rooted in the third generation of the Punto, this petite MPV (3930 mm in length) emerged from the creative hands of Italdesign, prioritizing passenger space to deliver a lofty vehicle capable of accommodating five occupants comfortably. Launched in late 2003 for the European market, the Fiat Idea rolled off the Mirafiori production line until 2012, and its production continued in Brazil until 2016. Sharing much of its design and components with the Lancia Musa, a sibling produced in the same facility, the Idea, with model code 350, materialized through a substantial investment of 430 million euros from the Turin-based automaker for both design and industrialization. Conceptualized by Italdesign as a compact city monovolume, the Fiat Idea, being under four meters in length, boasts excellent maneuverability, aided by the electric Dualdrive power steering that minimizes effort even when stationary. Taking a cue from the Panda, the elevated position of the gear lever enhances maneuverability. Standard across all versions, the instrumentation features an onboard computer with Trip function. The three-spoke steering wheel, adjustable in both height and, on select models, depth, adds a touch of innovation. Despite its modest dimensions for an MPV, the Idea offers remarkable interior spaciousness and comfort comparable to higher-category sedans. Efficient utilization of space is evident in numerous storage compartments, ranging from door panels to a longitudinal compartment on the roof, a transverse one above the windshield, and retractable dash-mounted trays. Petrol engines span 77 to 95 horsepower, while Multijet diesel options range from 69 to 120 horsepower. A distinctive feature is the central instrumentation, facilitating the incorporation of two lateral dash-mounted drawers. Production expanded to Brazil in 2005, at the Fiat facility in Betim. Even after the European model’s discontinuation, Brazilian production continued, undergoing significant updates in 2010 and a minor one in 2014. The production of the South American model concluded on June 17, 2016, marking the end of an era for the Fiat Idea.
