Fiat Formula 4

The Fiat Formula 4 by Italdesign Giugiaro.

Vehicle Overview

The Fiat Formula 4, unveiled at the 1996 Geneva Motor Show, was a bold and innovative concept car crafted by Italdesign. Targeting a youthful audience, the Formula 4 set itself apart with a unique design that not only catered to the tastes of the younger demographic but also focused on streamlining production costs. It was basically the barchetta version of the Legram and the Hammer. One of the standout features of the Formula 4 was its fit-over body concept, where a complementary shell covered the fully equipped floorpan, mechanicals, and upholstery. This design innovation allowed for easy fastening and removal through the assistance of an electric pulse. Notably, the Formula 4 did away with conventional doors, instead opting for a running board with a groundbreaking flap that, when pulled up, seamlessly integrated with the top into the channel. The interior of the Formula 4 was configured with four bucket seats, each protected by individual roll-bars. A unique aspect of the design was the ability to cover unoccupied seats when not in use, adding a practical touch to the convertible concept. Moreover, the Formula 4 demonstrated remarkable versatility by allowing for changes in the upper shell design. This adaptability facilitated conversions to various styles, including a roadster, leisure-time car, pick-up, and van. The process made use of plastic forming techniques that required different molds, minimizing production investments. Under the hood, the Formula 4 was built on a Fiat Bravo floorpan and featured a robust 2000 cc, HGT 5-cylinder engine generating an impressive 147 horsepower. This powertrain not only provided a thrilling driving experience but also complemented the car’s overall youthful and dynamic appeal. In summary, the Fiat Formula 4 was a groundbreaking concept car that combined a distinctive design with practical innovations, making it a standout choice for a younger, adventurous audience. With its adaptability and cost-effective production approach, the Formula 4 showcased Italdesign’s commitment to pushing the boundaries of automotive design and functionality.
