The Fiat Barchetta Coupé is an intriguing piece of automotive history, notable for its near-production status and its connection to the Fiat Barchetta roadster. Designed by the Italian coachbuilder Maggiora, which was already known for producing the Fiat Barchetta, the Coupé version was envisioned as a natural evolution of the existing roadster model. The concept for the Barchetta Coupé began with initial sketches by Andreas Zapatinas, who had already crafted the design for the regular Barchetta. Zapatinas was inspired to explore a coupé variant, but the idea faced a significant hurdle when Fiat Auto president Paolo Canarella rejected the proposal. Despite this setback, Maggiora’s head of product development, Alessandro Sopetti, was keen on the project. Sopetti drew inspiration from classic English two-seater coupés of the 1960s, such as the MGB-GT, which were often derived from roadsters, a practice that contrasted with the typical approach of today. Maggiora’s vision for the Barchetta Coupé was influenced by the timeless design and functionality of those classic cars, merging aesthetic appeal with the practical benefits of a hardtop. However, due to limitations in production capacity at Maggiora and the fact that Fiat already had a coupé model in its lineup, the Barchetta Coupé never reached full-scale production. This decision meant that while the Barchetta Coupé remained a compelling concept, it never materialized into a production vehicle. The idea, however, continues to be remembered fondly among automotive enthusiasts as a missed opportunity to expand the Fiat Barchetta’s legacy into the realm of stylish, classic-inspired coupés.
