The Fiat 8V Coupé Corsa Vignale chassis 106.000052.

Vehicle Overview

The Fiat 8V 106.000052 Coupé Corsa Vignale is a story in metal—a restless spirit captured in aluminum, forged in the fires of competition, and shaped by the hands of masters. It’s not just a car; it’s a living, breathing artifact from an era when racing was raw, and the passion for speed could be seen etched into every curve and crease of a handmade body. It all started on July 10, 1953, when Fiat sent chassis number 000052 as a bare frame to Alfredo Vignale’s workshop. This wasn’t just any delivery—it was the beginning of something extraordinary. Vignale, always looking to make a statement, teamed up with his design virtuoso, Giovanni Michelotti. Together, they sketched, debated, and sculpted, ultimately crafting a machine that was both elegant and ferocious—the only “Coupé Corsa” among the ten 8V bodies that Vignale would produce. Originally, Vignale had grand plans to debut the Coupé Corsa at the 1954 Paris Motor Show, a chance to steal the spotlight with its audacious design. But perfection takes time, and time wasn’t on their side. The car wasn’t ready. Instead, its first public appearance would be on the open road, where it belonged. The Coupé Corsa was born to race, and race it did. Its first coat of paint—a clean, aggressive combination of white and red—set the tone. Elegant but raw, refined yet unrestrained. It caught the eye of Casimiro Toselli, a gentleman racer with a penchant for speed. Toselli knew that this machine had potential, and he wasted no time putting it to the test. The car hit the road for the 1955 Rally del Sestrière and then took on the Giro di Sicilia, claiming 17th place—a respectable debut. But it was at the Mille Miglia where the Coupé Corsa truly made its mark. With Toselli at the wheel, it flew through the Brescia-Rome stretch in just over six hours, leading the pack of other 8Vs. It was a triumph in the making, until fate intervened—an accident near Rome forced it to retire. Racing is unforgiving, but the car didn’t quit. It simply transformed, adapted, evolved—like a boxer who refuses to stay down. By 1956, the car had found new owners—Francesco and Renato Canaparo—who kept the competitive spirit alive. The Coupé Corsa shed its early paint job for a bold white body with red stripes, a livery as daring as the races it entered. Aosta Gran San Bernardo, Giro Automobilistico delle Calabrie, Coppa InterEuropa—the car danced through them all, sometimes graceful, sometimes battered, but always driven to its limits. Racing takes a toll. In 1957, the car’s nose had to be reshaped, widened, and its rear reimagined after yet another intense encounter. The livery evolved, too—first a straight white stripe, then a dark mask, then back to a single shade of red. It was a car that couldn’t stay the same—always shifting, always adapting, like the racers who drove it. Its lightweight aluminum body, crafted with Michelotti’s touch, gave it an edge—100 kilograms lighter than the standard steel-bodied 8V. The engine, a howling V8 with 127 horsepower at 6,600 rpm, made sure it wasn’t just a pretty face. It was built to endure, to outlast the race, to push past the finish line no matter how bruised or battle-scarred. Years later, the Coupe Corsa found itself in a new role—not just a racer but a work of art. At the 2017 Concorso d’Eleganza Mantova, it stole the show, crowned “Best of Show” in recognition of its relentless spirit and unbreakable charm. It stood there, proud and timeless, a reminder of when cars weren’t just machines but stories told in metal and fuel, grit and glory.
