The Fiat 8V Vignale, chassis 106.000047, is an exceptional example of Italian automotive craftsmanship, representing a rare and beautifully preserved iteration of the legendary Otto Vu. Designed by the acclaimed Giovanni Michelotti for Alfredo Vignale’s Carrozzeria, this unique model showcases the innovative spirit of the 1950s and embodies the aesthetic trends of the Jet Age. Originally exported to Turin on June 11, 1953, this car was delivered in a striking green finish. Michelotti, known for his bold and elegant designs, brought his signature flair to this particular 8V, emphasizing a combination of muscular styling and refined details. One of the most distinctive aspects of chassis 106.000047 is its sculpted rear fenders, forming finned flying buttresses on either side of the deck lid, seamlessly integrating into the inset rear window. This bold design choice not only accentuates the car’s dynamic stance but also exemplifies the aerodynamic styling that was becoming increasingly popular during the period. The front of the car features a distinctive oval radiator opening, flanked by chrome “bumperettes” that echo the design language at the rear. The grille itself is a simple egg-crate insert, blending functionality with a refined, minimalist aesthetic. Chrome accents around the doorsills and windows add a touch of elegance, while the round headlights and distinctive front fender design reflect Vignale’s signature styling cues, reminiscent of other contemporaneous creations such as the OSCA models and Ferrari 375 Americas. The car’s proportions are further enhanced by low windows and a high beltline, creating a visual tension that highlights the sense of power and presence inherent to the 8V. This design choice contributes to the car’s commanding and athletic profile, setting it apart from other vehicles of the era. Inside, the Fiat 8V Vignale maintains an understated yet refined ambiance. The interior features pleated leather bucket seats and a minimalist dashboard equipped with simple, round Veglia gauges, reflecting a focus on driver engagement and functionality. This balance between luxury and sportiness encapsulates the essence of a true Italian grand tourer. After its display at the VII Concorso d’Eleganza di Roma on June 12–13, 1954, the car was delivered to its original owner, Alberto Carfomella, of Alessandria. Initially registered as AL 40085 on July 9, 1954, it was later re-registered in Perugia as PG 30151. By 1957, the car had been exported to the United States from Genoa, where it had already been repainted in a darker green. Its history between this point and the late 1980s remains unclear, until it was acquired by the Blackhawk Collection in Southern California. Described by Don Williams as “a nice, well-preserved car, that was ‘pure’ then and still is,” the 8V underwent a careful restoration by Mike Fennel, focusing on refreshing the paint, interior, and mechanical components. Since the car remained in excellent condition, the restoration was largely cosmetic, resulting in the current red exterior complemented by a tan leather interior, completed in 1990. In 1992, it was acquired by the current owner and has since remained in a distinguished European collection. A particularly remarkable feature of this 8V is that it retains its original engine, a rarity among surviving examples. Historian Tony Adriaensens, in his book Otto Vu, emphasizes the significance of this preservation, as most 8Vs were driven hard, leading to the loss of their original engines.

The Fiat 8V
In March 1952, Fiat surprised the world at the Geneva Motor Show with the Fiat 8V. A two-seater sports car that was also designed as a racing car. What was surprising was that Fiat had not shown any interest in re-entering the racing scene up to this point.
