Fiat 750 MM Scansina
The Fiat 750 MM Scansina by Zagato Milano.
Vehicle Overview
The Fiat 750 MM Scansina was a remarkable creation by Carrozzeria Zagato from Milan, with only eight specimens ever built. Based on the Fiat 500 Topolino chassis, which originally featured a modest 13 horsepower engine, Zagato managed to elevate its performance significantly. By making precise modifications to the engine, Zagato increased the power output to an impressive 17 horsepower. This boost, combined with the lightweight handmade aluminum body and aerodynamic shape, contributed to the car’s notable performance. One of the standout features of the Fiat 750 MM Scansina was its Panoramica body, an innovative design that utilized Plexiglas for the upper part of the windshield, as well as for the rear and side windows. This modern solution offered the driver wide visibility and provided the passenger with a panoramic view, enhancing the overall driving experience. The car’s remarkable showing at the 1954 Mille Miglia race, one of the most challenging and prestigious racing events of its time, further highlighted its capabilities. This particular Scansina managed to finish fourth, a remarkable feat considering the competition and the car’s modest beginnings. This achievement cemented its place in automotive history, making it the most famous of the 750 MM Zagato models. The name “Topolino” is Italian for “Little Mouse,” a fitting moniker for the original Fiat 500 due to its small size and charming appearance. Zagato’s transformation of the Topolino into the 750 MM Scansina was nothing short of extraordinary. The modifications not only enhanced the car’s power but also optimized its aerodynamics, allowing it to compete effectively in endurance races like the Mille Miglia. Carrozzeria Zagato, renowned for their craftsmanship and innovative designs, utilized their expertise to create a car that was both visually appealing and high-performing. The use of a handmade aluminum body was a significant factor in reducing the car’s weight, thereby improving its speed and handling. The aerodynamic design further minimized drag, enabling the Scansina to achieve higher speeds on the race track.
