Vehicle Overview

The Fiat 500 My Car Trasformabile, developed by the Vercelli-based coachbuilder Francis Lombardi between 1968 and 1971, was a custom version of the iconic Fiat 500. It was one of the most successful modified versions of the small utility car, becoming particularly popular during its production run. Unlike other Fiat 500 modifications, the 500 My Car garnered significant commercial success, thanks to its eye-catching design and the flexibility it offered in terms of customization. Produced in two versions—one with a hardtop and the other with a sunroof (“trasformabile”)—the Fiat 500 My Car was assembled at Lombardi’s body shop after incomplete cars were sent by Fiat. This approach, where coachbuilders like Lombardi and Abarth received partially completed vehicles for further modification, was a common practice at the time. The custom work on the Fiat 500 was extensive, creating a version that stood out from the standard production model. One of the standout features of the 500 My Car was its redesigned roof. Featuring two transverse ribs and a small spoiler, the roof not only added a sporty touch but also improved the car’s interior space and habitability. This made the 500 My Car a more comfortable option compared to the standard Fiat 500 F. The car also boasted several stylish and unique elements, including a shaped dashboard covered in black plastic, a wooden steering wheel and gear knob, rear windows that opened, stainless steel sill panels, and a rounded chrome grille with a zamak frame. Steel wheel rings and the option for metallic paint further contributed to its appeal. Despite a higher price than the original Fiat 500, the My Car model’s quicker delivery times and improved interior comfort helped it gain popularity. Only a few thousand units were produced, but its commercial success was a notable exception among the many special versions created by various coachbuilders during this era.
