The Fiat 2800 Torpedo by Stabilimenti Farina.

Vehicle Overview

The Fiat 2800 Torpedo holds a distinguished place in automotive history, crafted with elegance and practicality tailored for prestigious roles from royal fleets to state functions. Only six of these remarkable cars were ever produced, each bearing the “Torpedo” designation, exclusively commissioned for the Royal Family’s use at the Palazzo del Quirinale. Designed by Dante Giacosa in 1938, the Fiat 2800 was initially conceptualized with a pioneering transversally-mounted rear engine layout. However, Fiat’s board of directors opted for a conventional front-engine, rear-wheel-drive configuration under Giacosa’s skilled guidance. This decision was prudent given the vehicle’s intended roles—catering to affluent families and government dignitaries necessitated reliability and robust performance over experimental design. Stylized by Stabilimenti Farina, the Fiat 2800 Torpedo exuded authority and presence, characterized by its imposing, tall front grille. Its robust 2.8-liter straight-six engine, generating 85 horsepower at 3,000 rpm, propelled the vehicle to a top speed of 130 km/h despite its weight of 2.5 tonnes. This powertrain was renowned for its durability, suitable for dignified processions and stately occasions, mirroring the solemn marches of the Regime during its time in Italy. Production of the Fiat 2800 persisted amidst the looming threat of World War II, with 621 units manufactured until 1944. Among these, a notable dozen were swiftly configured as “Torpedo Reale” for ceremonial duties, coinciding with Adolf Hitler’s 1938 visit. The remaining chassis found diverse uses: from saloons to military variants, and innovative transformations by coachbuilders like Bertone and Stanguellini, which spawned unique cabriolet and sport versions post-war. Whether serving as the backdrop for historic events, enduring wartime rigors, or simply cruising the streets in regal splendor, the Fiat 2800 Torpedo epitomized automotive excellence amidst tumultuous times. Its blend of reliability, grandeur, and adaptability ensures its legacy as a remarkable symbol of Italian automotive prowess and craftsmanship from the pre-war era.
