The Fiat 124 C4 one-off Cabriolet by Touring Superleggera.
The Fiat 124 C4 by Touring emerged in 1964 as a beacon of innovation. Initially, Fiat introduced the sturdy Fiat 124, a reliable sedan boasting commendable performance at an affordable price point. Recognizing an opportunity, Touring swiftly approached Fiat’s leadership, proposing the creation of an economical convertible to rejuvenate the brand. Fiat, intrigued by the concept, entrusted Touring with one of the earliest 124 models, the 44th vehicle off the production line. Touring’s skilled hands meticulously transformed the humble 124 sedan into a charismatic convertible. The roof was artfully removed, the windshield subtly adjusted for a sleeker profile, and the body fortified for enhanced durability. Not stopping there, Touring replaced the sedan’s original four doors with two larger ones, amplifying the car’s charm and functionality. The outcome was nothing short of remarkable. Priced just under 1,500,000 lire—barely exceeding the original sedan’s cost of 1,150,000 lire—the Fiat 124 C4 Touring cabriolet, crafted from 80% of the original components, promised an exhilarating driving experience at an accessible price point. Fiat, after subjecting the vehicle to rigorous testing, passed it to Fiat France, where demand surged, with a request for 10,000 units—a lifeline that could have salvaged Touring from impending doom. However, fate dealt a cruel hand. Delays and setbacks plagued the project, ultimately sealing the fate of this ambitious venture and marking the demise of the esteemed company.
