The Fiat 1100C Spider Frua one-off.

Vehicle Overview

The Fiat 1100C Spider Frua is a quintessential example of post-war automotive design, embodying the ingenuity and elegance that characterized Italy’s coachbuilding prowess during the mid-20th century. Crafted by Pietro Frua, a visionary designer and founder of his own coachbuilding company, this car marked Frua’s first original project after World War II—a period when Italy’s automotive industry was reawakening amidst the ruins of war. Pietro Frua, having established his workshop and revitalized a bomb-damaged factory, embarked on creating a masterpiece that would showcase his design philosophy and technical skill. The Fiat 1100C chassis served as the canvas for his vision, and in 1946, the car took shape under his meticulous direction. Based on a chassis obtained from Carrozzeria Balbo in 1946, the design of the body was used by Frua on other chassis such as Lancia Aprilia and Mercedes. Characterized by its sleek lines, understated elegance, and forward-thinking design elements, the Fiat 1100C Spider Frua made its debut. Its unveiling at the Concorso di Como Coppa Villa d’Este in September 1947 marked a significant moment. Entered by Alvise DePasquale, a Fiat dealer, the spider captivated both the public and the press with its modernity and sophistication. Despite not being considered for judging at the 1947 Concorso in Turin due to a late entry, the Fiat garnered favorable reviews in prominent Italian motoring magazines like Auto Italiana and MotorItalia. Stefano Bricarelli, writing in MotorItalia, praised its sobriety and modern lines, likening Frua’s achievement to Christian Dior’s “New Look” in fashion. The Fiat 1100C Spider Frua changed hands over the decades, each transition adding layers to its storied history. From Luigi Critterio to Gino Bubbolini and eventually to Mr. Tagliabue of Milan, the spider continued to be appreciated for its design and craftsmanship. Its journey in Italy saw changes in ownership, registrations, and occasional appearances at various events, maintaining its allure among enthusiasts who valued its historical significance. In 2010, the Fiat was acquired by Mr. Petrilli of Rome, a turning point that led to its meticulous restoration under the expert guidance of Daniele Turrisi and classic car consultant Donald Osborne. The restoration process, undertaken at Carrozzeria Gatti Luciano in Bergamo, Italy, was a labor of love that aimed to restore the car to its original glory as seen at the Concorso di Como in 1947. Remarkably, during the restoration, sections of the original light green metallic paint were uncovered, providing a glimpse into its authentic past. Restored to its original specifications with painstaking attention to detail, the Fiat 1100C Spider Frua made a triumphant return to the international concours circuit. Its reappearance at the 2017 Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este, exactly 70 years after its debut, underscored its status as a masterpiece of automotive design and restoration. Subsequent appearances at prestigious events like the Concours of Elegance Hampton Court Palace and the Concorso d’Eleganza Kyoto further solidified its reputation, winning accolades and admiration for its beauty and historical significance. In August 2018, the Fiat 1100C Spider Frua graced the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance, where it impressed judges and spectators alike in the highly competitive Postwar Touring Class. Its presence at such esteemed events highlighted its enduring appeal and the meticulous craftsmanship that went into its restoration. The 1100C was sold by Bonhams in 2019 for US$ 577,000.
