Vehicle Overview
The Ferrari PPG, a one-off pace car based on the Ferrari Mondial, was a unique collaboration between Ferrari and I.DE.A Institute, created specifically for the PPG Pace Car Team. This vehicle holds a distinctive place in automotive history as the only Ferrari to ever serve as a pace car for the prestigious team. Built using the chassis of a Mondial t (chassis 76390), the Ferrari PPG underwent significant modifications to its bodywork. The design was led by I.DE.A Institute, which reinterpreted the Mondial’s classic styling to give it a more dynamic and customized look suited to its new role. At the time of its creation, the cost of building this one-off Ferrari was approximately $1,000,000, which, when adjusted for inflation to 2019, would exceed $2,000,000. This level of investment highlighted the significance of the vehicle and its exclusive nature. Despite its eye-catching design and performance potential, the Ferrari PPG was reportedly one of the least reliable cars in the PPG Pace Car Team’s history. As was typical for many exotic Italian cars of the era, the car was known to have mechanical issues that would sometimes hinder its performance. However, when the Ferrari PPG was running properly, it performed magnificently, living up to the high-performance standards Ferrari is known for. During its time in the PPG Pace Car Team, the PPG was involved in an incident where it went off track, sustaining minor body damage. This damage was repaired, but it is a reminder of the risks and challenges involved in using such high-performance, exotic vehicles in racing environments. Despite its challenges, the Ferrari PPG remains a one-of-a-kind pace car that holds a special place in Ferrari and motorsports history.
