The Ferrari 625 LM chassis 0642 by Touring.

Vehicle Overview

The Ferrari 625 LM Chassis #0642, one of the most iconic and meticulously crafted cars to emerge from Ferrari’s storied history, epitomizes the seamless blend of speed, style, and innovation that the brand became famous for in the mid-20th century. This particular model, a 500 (625) LM Spyder Touring, was originally fitted with a  Touring Superleggera body and a 2.0-liter engine and was an early example of Ferrari’s racing ambitions. The car was part of Ferrari’s line-up in 1956, and chassis #0642 made its debut at the Supercortemaggiore GP in Monza in June of 1956. Driven by the legendary Peter Collins and Mike Hawthorn, it achieved a notable 1st overall and marked a major success for the Ferrari team. This victory highlighted the potential of Ferrari’s racing pedigree and showcased their ability to build race-ready cars that could contend with the best. However, the 625 LM Spyder’s racing history took a turn during the 24 Hours of Le Mans later that same year. Fitted with a 3.0-liter engine, the car suffered an unfortunate accident, forcing its drivers, Alfonso de Portago and Duncan Hamilton, to retire from the race. Despite this setback, the car was repaired at Ferrari’s factory, and its engine was reverted back to the original 2.0-liter version. After its repairs, the 625 LM was repainted in a striking yellow with red wheels in 1957, further adding to its visual appeal. The car was entered into numerous prestigious races, such as the 5 Hours of Messina, where it claimed victory in 1st overall in August 1956, with Phil Hill behind the wheel. This was just one of many triumphs the car would experience over the years. The Ferrari 625 LM’s journey continued as it passed through the hands of many notable owners, including Luigi Chinetti, Robert Publicker, and William Kimberly, who helped cement its place in the racing world with consistent top finishes. In 1959, the car raced at events like the SCCA National Pensacola and SCCA Regional Milwaukee, where it secured impressive results, including a 1st in EM at the SCCA National Lime Rock in 1960. Bill Kimberly was at the helm for most of these races, piloting the car to numerous podium finishes. The Ferrari 625 LM had a reputation not only for its racing pedigree but also for its elegance. The car was repainted in red with white stripes, a striking appearance that helped it stand out at various events. In 1961, the car continued to impress, even securing 1st in its class at the SCCA Divisional Grayling AAF in 1962. In the later years, as with many classic Ferraris, the car transitioned from competitive racing to being showcased at high-profile events. In the 1980s, the 625 LM was exhibited at prestigious gatherings like the Mille Miglia and FCA Concours. Ownership passed through the hands of Ferrari enthusiasts like Steve Barney, who owned the car in the 1990s, and Shin-Ichi Yasuoka, a prominent figure in the Ferrari Club of Japan. Over the years, this remarkable machine has been featured at concours events worldwide, including the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance, where it’s been shown in various classes. In 2005, the car was part of a Ferrari auction, fetching significant attention and a high bid that reflected its incredible history and value.
