The Ferrari 500 Mondial, chassis 0410MD.
Vehicle Overview
The Ferrari 500 Mondial, chassis 0410MD, is a quintessential example of Ferrari’s racing legacy from the 1950s. Manufactured in 1954, this 500 Mondial Spyder PF (Pininfarina) is a right-hand-drive (RHD) vehicle, which was notable for its bespoke design and racing pedigree. Finished in yellow with a soft top, the car features a headrest, which is a distinctive feature for improved driver safety during high-speed races. The car’s first documented owner was S.A.I.P.A. Srl., based in Modena, Italy, in 1954. It was raced by notable Italian driver Enrico Sterzi, who competed in several events. The 500 Mondial first participated in the 6th Giro dell’Umbria and Coppa della Perugina in June 1954 but failed to finish (DNF). In October 1954, it raced at the Treponti Castelnuovo and finished 5th, showcasing the car’s competitive potential. This marked the beginning of its racing history, with Sterzi driving it in various events throughout the year. In 1955, the car passed into the hands of Gino Casarotto, an accomplished Italian driver. Casarotto campaigned the car in several prestigious races, including the GP Supercortemaggiore in Monza, where it was listed as a non-completion (NC). It participated in the Trieste-Opicina hillclimb, finishing 5th overall and 5th in the S2.0 category, demonstrating its competitive edge. The 500 Mondial continued to compete in the Coppa d’Oro delle Dolomiti and Treponti Castelnuovo, finishing 15th and 8th, respectively. Throughout 1955, the car’s performance in various events was solid, even though it faced a few non-finishes. The car’s racing journey continued in 1956 with Casarotto behind the wheel in events such as the Corsa in salita sulle Torricelle and the Mille Miglia, though it failed to complete the latter race. It also participated in the Gran Premio Nuvolari and Bolzano-Mendola, achieving a 16th-place finish in one of the latter events. Ownership of the car shifted over the years, with subsequent owners including Franco Dari in 1957, who raced it in events like Bologna-San Luca. The car continued to be a fixture in historic racing events, such as the Mille Miglia, where it was regularly entered during the 1980s, with drivers such as Mario Righini at the helm. Today, the Ferrari 500 Mondial chassis #0410MD remains a cherished piece of Ferrari’s history, with its rich racing heritage preserved in events such as the Modena Cento Ore Classic in 2005 and exhibitions at the Museo Enzo Ferrari in 2012. Its continued presence in motorsport showcases the lasting legacy of Ferrari’s engineering excellence, further cementing its place in automotive hist
