Delivered on December 22, 1953, this particular car was designed by Giovanni Michelotti for Carrozzeria Vignale, a collaboration that produced a striking blend of Italian elegance and automotive engineering. The car was originally presented in a unique light yellow color with an ivory roof and an Arbo tan verde interior, reflecting the distinct aesthetic choices of the era. Built on the Tipo 104 chassis, the 375 America was powered by Ferrari’s Tipo 104 engine and paired with a corresponding Tipo 104 gearbox. Initially, the car gained significant attention when it was displayed at the 1954 Torino Motor Show. By May 1954, it had been sold to John Shakespeare of Centralia, Illinois, via Ferrari’s North American distributor, Luigi Chinetti. The car’s first major event appearance was at the 1954 Chanute AFB Concours in Indiana, where it achieved a first-place finish in Class B Production. In the following years, the Ferrari 375 America Coupé went through various changes and owners. In the mid-1960s, the car underwent significant modifications, including the replacement of its engine and gearbox with parts from a Chevrolet/Oldsmobile rear axle. These alterations were part of the car’s journey through several U.S. states before it was acquired by George S. Murtha in 1975, who had it painted with a dark green exterior and grey metallic roof. It remained in Murtha’s collection until 1990, after which it passed to various owners, including Joseph W. Moch, who acquired it in 1997. In 1998, the car was offered by SMC in La Jolla, California, and sold for $150,000. After several price revisions and ownership changes, the car ultimately landed in the hands of Heinrich Kaempfer in 2007, who embarked on a complete restoration. Kaempfer’s efforts culminated in the car’s debut at the 2009 Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance, where it won both the prestigious Enzo Ferrari Award and first place in Class M2. Additionally, it claimed the Best of Show title at the 45th Annual Ferrari Club of America National Concours in Elkhart Lake, further solidifying its status as one of Ferrari’s most revered models. In 2011, the car was sold at a Gooding & Co. auction for $2.2 million, including buyer’s premium, to Scott D. Morris. Since then, the Ferrari 375 America Coupé Vignale has continued to be a standout in high-profile events such as The Quail, A Motorsports Gathering, where it was part of The Great Ferrari class in 2014. With its historical significance, exemplary restoration, and consistent presence in prestigious events, this Ferrari remains a cherished gem for collectors and enthusiasts alike.
