The Ferrari 342 America Coupé designed by Pininfarina.

Vehicle Overview

The Ferrari 342 America Coupé PF’s genesis is a testament to Ferrari’s commitment to blending racing technology with road-going luxury. As a key part of Ferrari’s transition from track to street, the 342 America was conceived as a more refined and robust alternative to its competition-oriented predecessor, the 340 America. Introduced in the early 1950s, the 342 America represented a significant evolution in Ferrari’s Gran Turismo lineup. The model was designed from the outset as a pure road car, featuring enhancements that catered to both comfort and performance. It was equipped with a 9-inch longer wheelbase compared to the 340 America, contributing to a more spacious and stable ride. Additionally, the car boasted a four-speed all-synchromesh gearbox, providing smoother and more reliable shifting. Underpinning the 342 America was the Lampredi-designed V12 engine, which was a direct evolution of Ferrari’s successful Grand Prix power units. This 4,101cc, two-cam V12 engine delivered a respectable 200 bhp at 5,000 rpm, ensuring that the 342 America had both the power and the refinement expected of a high-end Ferrari. This engine was derived from the racing engines that had powered Ferrari’s efforts in the competitive world of motorsport, reflecting the brand’s strategy of integrating racing success into its road cars. Ferrari produced just six examples of the 342 America between 1952 and 1953, making it one of the rarest Ferrari models ever built. The cars were crafted with meticulous attention to detail, with all but one of the series being bodied by Pinin Farina. This process resulted in a mix of two cabriolets and three coupés, each one a bespoke creation tailored to the individual preferences of its owner. The first car in the series, a Vignale cabriolet on chassis number ‘0232AL’, set the tone for the exclusive nature of the model. The penultimate 342 America, chassis number ‘0246AL’, entered the Pinin Farina plant on December 30, 1952. Finished in black and showcased at the 23rd Geneva Motor Show in March 1953, it was a standout example of Ferrari’s craftsmanship and design excellence. Initially sold to Franco Fassio in Italy, it later went through several owners, including notable figures like Steve Briggs and William R. Peters, and underwent restorations to maintain its prestige. The car was even featured in European auto shows, reflecting its lasting appeal and the high regard in which it is held by enthusiasts and collectors alike.
