Ferrari 335 Sport Scaglietti

Chassis

#0674

The Ferrari 335 Sport Scaglietti chassis 0674.

Vehicle Overview

The Ferrari 335 Sport Scaglietti chassis 0674 was completed in 1957, leaving the Ferrari workshops as a barchetta-bodied car with a powerful 3.8-litre V12 Tipo 140 engine. Originally a Ferrari 315S, the car was converted to the 335 Sport specification after the Mille Miglia in 1957. It was fitted with the newly developed four-cam engine and was stamped with multiple chassis numbers: 0626, 0656, and 0674. This chassis is noted for its racing history, beginning with a strong performance at the Sebring 12 Hours on March 23, 1957, where Peter Collins and Maurice Trintignant drove it to a 6th-place finish overall. Despite leading for the first 20 laps, it was unable to maintain the pace and slipped back, finishing behind the winning Maserati 450S. Following Sebring, 0674 was entered in the Mille Miglia on May 11-12, 1957. Ferrari fielded the car with Wolfgang von Trips behind the wheel, where he finished second overall and second in the S+2.0 class. This was a remarkable achievement, coming just behind Piero Taruffi, who claimed victory in the event. The victory was bittersweet, however, as the race ended tragically with the fatal crash of De Portago after a tire failure, resulting in the deaths of several spectators and leading to the end of the event itself. After the Mille Miglia, the car continued to race in various events throughout 1957. At the 24 Hours of Le Mans in June 1957, Mike Hawthorn and Luigi Musso were forced to retire the car after engine failure. 0674’s next major race was the Swedish Grand Prix in August 1957, where Hawthorn and Musso finished 4th overall and 4th in the S+2.0 class. Before the Venezuela Grand Prix, the car underwent modifications, including the addition of pontoon fenders for better brake cooling. The car’s final race of 1957 was the 1000km Caracas in November, where Hawthorn and Musso secured 2nd overall and 2nd in the S+2.0 class. After the 1957 season, the car was sold to Luigi Chinetti in the United States. Throughout 1958, 0674 raced under the ownership of Mike Garber, with Gaston Andrey and other drivers competing in various SCCA events, achieving notable results at Watkins Glen, Road America, and Nassau. The car’s history was marked by frequent changes in ownership. It was discovered in 1966 by Bob Dusek and later acquired by Pierre Bardinon of Mas du Clos in 1969. Throughout the years, it was showcased at various prestigious events, including the Cartier ‘Hommage a Ferrari’ exhibition in 1987 and the 50th Anniversary of Ferrari in 1997. In 2016, the car was auctioned at the Artcurial Retromobil Auction, where it sold for €32,075,200 ($35.7 million), a testament to its incredible history and significance. It continued to appear at major events, such as the Finali Mondiali Daytona in 2016, and the Pebble Beach Concours d’Élégance in 2019, where it won the Best in Show award. As of 2024, the car remains in the ownership of Brian Ross, who has continued to showcase it at prestigious concours events, including the Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este where it won its category, and Salon Privé Blenheim.
