The Ferrari 330 GTC Zagato one-off.
The Ferrari 330 GTC Zagato is a unique model that emerged from a collaboration between Ferrari and the renowned Italian coachbuilder Zagato. In 1974, American Ferrari importer Chinetti commissioned Zagato to create a one-of-a-kind car based on the Ferrari 330 GTC chassis. This car, known as the 330 Convertibile Zagato, marked Zagato’s tenth car built on a Ferrari platform, continuing the legacy of Italian craftsmanship and engineering excellence. The design of the 330 Convertibile was inspired by the earlier 3Z Spider, but with several key modifications that set it apart from its predecessor. The name “Convertibile” reflected the car’s body style, as it was fitted with rear pillars and a “targa” type removable rigid roof. Unlike the Spider, which featured a smooth, sloping rear end, the Convertibile had a higher and bulkier tail. The change in the tail design added a more substantial presence to the car, further distinguishing it from the more svelte Spider version. The front headlights, which were visible, were veiled with an innovative darkened plexiglas cover. These covers were rectangular in shape and flush with the body, lending a sleek and modern look to the car. Additionally, the rear light clusters were modified and recessed into smaller niches, offering a more streamlined design compared to earlier models. Finished in a striking light red color, the 330 Convertibile Zagato appeared both strong and solid, slightly heavier than the Spider. This design choice was likely intentional by Chinetti, as he wanted to emphasize the Convertible element of the car, offering a different driving experience with the added weight of the more robust bodywork. However, the mid-1970s oil crisis soon began to affect the demand for personal luxury cars, and the 330 Convertibile Zagato became a rare collector’s item. It remains the only car of its type, and its distinctive features and limited production make it a unique and important part of Ferrari’s history.
