Ferrari 308 GTS
The Ferrari 308 GTS designed by Pininfarina.
Vehicle Overview
The Ferrari 308 GTS Quattrovalvole, designed by Pininfarina, was the result of Ferrari’s commitment to blending performance with aesthetics. Introduced to address the power loss caused by the transition from carburetors to fuel injection and stricter anti-pollution laws, the Quattrovalvole (four valves per cylinder) was the technical solution that restored the 308’s performance pedigree. Produced between 1975 and 1985, the Ferrari 308 came in two primary versions: the 308 GTB with a fixed roof and the GTS (Gran Turismo Scoperta) featuring a removable targa-style roof. Like its 208 and 328 siblings, it utilized a mid-engine, rear-wheel-drive layout, optimizing balance and handling. The 308 GTS remained a staple of Ferrari’s lineup until 1985, when it was succeeded by the 328. Ferrari envisioned the 308 as a more captivating successor to the Dino 308 GT4, which had received a lukewarm reception. Taking cues from the beloved Dino 246, the new model emphasized lightweight construction and an aggressive silhouette, catering to gentleman drivers who desired both performance and style. Pininfarina, under the guidance of Leonardo Fioravanti, sculpted the 308’s shape, drawing clear inspiration from the 512 BB. The result was a car that seamlessly blended aerodynamic efficiency with dramatic styling, highlighted by its low-slung profile and distinctive side air intakes—a nod to the Dino 246. The bodywork was constructed by Sergio Scaglietti, Ferrari’s trusted coachbuilder, renowned for his expertise in composite materials. The GTS version, unveiled at the 1977 Frankfurt Motor Show, shared much of its DNA with the GTB, with subtle differences. The removable targa top added an open-air driving experience, while louvered panels behind the side windows replaced the Berlinetta’s glass, providing additional cooling and a signature design touch. Structural reinforcements compensated for the reduced rigidity of the open-top configuration. With the Quattrovalvole update, the 308 GTS regained its performance edge. Its 2.9-liter V8 engine, now featuring four valves per cylinder, delivered improved airflow and efficiency, restoring the lost power from earlier fuel-injected models. The 0-100 km/h sprint was achieved in 6.5 seconds, with a 100-200 km/h acceleration time of 17.8 seconds. Its top speed of 252 km/h ensured that the 308 remained a true Ferrari, built to thrill both on the road and the track. A masterpiece of engineering and design, the Ferrari 308 GTS Quattrovalvole remains one of the most celebrated sports cars of its era, embodying the passion and precision that define the Prancing Horse..
