Ferrari 275 GTB Scaglietti

The Ferrari 275 GTB Scaglietti.

Vehicle Overview

The Ferrari 275 GTB was unveiled at the Paris Auto Show in late 1964, marking a significant advancement in Ferrari’s road car lineup. Designed by Pininfarina and built by Scaglietti, the 275 GTB incorporated a strong emphasis on aerodynamics while maintaining Ferrari’s signature elegance and performance. One of the most important engineering improvements introduced with the 275 GTB was the adoption of independent suspension at both the front and rear. This was a departure from Ferrari’s previous reliance on a live rear axle and allowed for a superior handling experience. Additionally, the new design enabled Ferrari to integrate a five-speed gearbox at the rear of the car, in unit with the final drive as a transaxle. This configuration improved weight distribution and handling dynamics while allowing for a more compact transmission tunnel, which in turn increased interior space. Powering the Ferrari 275 GTB was a 3.3-liter DOHC Colombo V12 engine, producing an impressive 300 horsepower. The engine was connected to the rear-mounted transaxle via a rigid torque tube, enhancing the structural integrity of the drivetrain and further refining the car’s balance and driving dynamics. A total of 442 Ferrari 275 GTB models were produced, with 206 of them being Series II later-production models featuring a longer nose design. This modification was made to improve high-speed stability by reducing aerodynamic lift. Among the 275 GTB models, a select few were even more exclusive. Just 60 examples were constructed with lightweight alloy bodies, making them highly sought after among collectors. These alloy-bodied cars offered improved performance due to their reduced weight, reinforcing the 275 GTB’s reputation as one of the finest grand tourers of its era. The Ferrari 275 GTB remains a landmark model in Ferrari’s history, embodying a perfect blend of engineering innovation, performance, and timeless design. Its advancements in chassis dynamics and drivetrain configuration set a precedent for future Ferrari road and racing cars, ensuring its enduring legacy in the world of classic automobiles.
