The Ferrari 250 GT Zagato chassis 0512GT.
The Ferrari 250 GT Zagato, chassis 0512GT, is a distinguished example of the partnership between Ferrari and the esteemed Italian coachbuilder Zagato. In 1956, Zagato received a rare and unexpected commission when two of Ferrari’s loyal clients, Vladimiro Galluzzi of Milan and Camillo Luglio of Genova, requested Ferrari to supply two 250 GT LWB chassis specifically for Zagato to body. Despite Ferrari’s usual reliance on other coachbuilders like Ghia, Touring, Scaglietti, Vignale, and primarily Pinin Farina, Enzo Ferrari agreed to this request due to his longstanding friendship with Ugo Zagato and to satisfy his valued customers. Zagato applied its aeronautical-inspired lightweight construction techniques, which had been a hallmark of the company since its inception in 1919. This innovative approach resulted in a lightweight, aerodynamically efficient, and aesthetically striking body for the 250 GTZ. The design not only looked exceptional but also contributed to the car’s competitive success, helping Camillo Luglio to secure the Italian sports car championship twice. Chassis 0512GT, purchased in 1956 by Vladimiro Galluzzi, quickly made its mark in various racing events. It achieved notable finishes, including third overall and first in its class at the Trofeo Sardo, and third in its class at the Giro delle Calabrie. The car also participated in prestigious events like the Bolzano-Mendola hill climb and the Coppa d’Oro delle Dolomiti. The car’s competition history continued under subsequent owners, including Luigi Taramazzo, who secured several victories in hill climbs such as the Garessio-Colle San Bernardo. The car was later repainted white and continued to compete in various events before eventually making its way to the United States. In the U.S., the car changed hands multiple times, often passing through the stewardship of notable collectors and enthusiasts like Edwin K. Niles. It underwent a comprehensive restoration by Steve Tillack in the early 1980s, after which it participated in numerous concours and historic racing events, including the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance and the Monterey Historic Races. Currently owned by David Sydorick, chassis 0512GT continues to be showcased at prestigious events worldwide suche as Villa d’Este 2022, maintaining its status as a celebrated and historically significant Ferrari. This unique 250 GT Zagato embodies the harmonious blend of Italian craftsmanship, competitive spirit, and the enduring legacy of the Ferrari-Zagato collaboration.
